Boerne is the kind of town that rewards a slow pace. Thirty minutes northwest of San Antonio and rooted in the German settlements of the 1850s, this Hill Country gem pairs a walkable historic Main Street with creekside trails, family wineries, and a calendar full of festivals. Here is what we would tell a first-time visitor to do, straight from our front desk.
1. Walk the Hill Country Mile
Boerne’s historic Main Street, known locally as the Hill Country Mile, is lined with shops, galleries, cafes, and restaurants that lean into the town’s German roots and its Texas present. Start at Main Plaza, walk from one end to the other, then double back for the shops you missed. Bring cash for the antique stores and a healthy appetite.
2. Take the Cibolo Trail from our front door
The Cibolo Trail begins just steps from the front porch at The Kendall. Follow the creek past shaded picnic spots, wildflower stretches, and the Cibolo Center for Conservation. Easy, mostly flat, and beautiful in every season. Bring water, and if you are lucky, cardinals will keep you company.
3. Visit a Hill Country winery
Boerne sits at the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country wine trail. A dozen family wineries are within a half hour drive, and most have tasting rooms with generous porches and Hill Country views. Ask us at the front desk which ones best fit your taste, and we can put together a route.
4. Explore Cave Without a Name and Boerne Lake
Cave Without a Name is one of the Hill Country’s most underrated natural attractions, twenty minutes east of downtown. Boerne Lake, a few minutes north, is a favorite for a lazy afternoon. Both make excellent half-day trips when you want to stretch your visit past the town square.
5. Time your visit to a Boerne festival
Boerne’s German heritage shows up in its festivals. Berges Fest in summer is a beloved local weekend of music and food. Weihnachtsmarkt fills Main Street with lights and Christmas markets each December. Dickens on Main brings Victorian charm right before the holidays. Check the calendar before you book, and pair a festival with a stay to make the trip unforgettable.
Where to stay
The best home base for exploring Boerne is one that puts you right in the middle of it. The Kendall sits on Blanco Road in the heart of downtown, steps from the Hill Country Mile and the Cibolo Trail trailhead. Book a room, walk to dinner, and let the town slow you down for a night or two.
